The rules for Roulette online are the same.
Now that you have a better understanding of a roulette table layout, you will need to familiarize yourself with the three main variations of roulette, including European Roulette, American Roulette, and French Roulette.
European Roulette: This variation of roulette utilises a single zero and is considered the most popular version of the game that you will most likely find in land-based and online casinos. The single zero offers a lower house edge and will provide a better return on your money.
American Roulette: This variation is almost as popular as European Roulette, as both share the same game rules. The biggest difference between the two variations is the extra double zero square added to the American Roulette variation. This provides a higher house edge to the casino as well.
French Roulette: Both European and French Roulette share a similar compartment wheel consisting of 37 numbers and have similar game rules. The main differences between European Roulette and French Roulette is obviously the language barrier that is displayed on the roulette table layout and the added rules, including ‘La Partage’, allowing players to only lose half their wager if the white ball ends up in an unmarked zero, and the ‘En Prison’ that follows the ‘La Partage’ rule, allowing players to leave their wagers on the table for the next spin.
History of Roulette
The history of roulette is rather unclear, but most believe that it originated from the Wheel of Fortune. Other influences can be tracked back to Biribi, an Italian board game, and the English Even/Odd, or better known as English E.O games.
Blaise Pascal is widely believed to have invented the game of roulette. He was a French physicist who was renowned for his work in science and mathematics, continuously breaking new ground with his research. Blaise Pascal provided the mathematical theory of probability in his work that was directly linked to gambling during the 17th century.
During the 18th-century roulette spread across France and the game received a single zero and the black and red squares that were initially known as house pockets. During the same century, American Roulette was formed, featuring 28 numbers, a single zero, double zero and an eagle, known as the house pocket. The eagle basically represented the American symbol for liberty and provided additional house edge for land-based casinos. Nowadays you can play roulette online, so you don’t have to leave the house.
